Free Laptops for rural people

The news of distributing free laptops to rural folks caught my attention recently. I for one appreciate the noble intention of the Ministry concerned to extend the digital world to the people residing in rural areas. However, looking at the picture of one of the recipients make me wonder whether much thought has been given before hand. By looking at the condition of the house, with due respect, i wonder whether basic amenities such as water and electricity were there. Not to mention whether training has been given to them to operate. Well, perhaps, the laptops were meant to be handed over later to their children who are studying in boarding schools...?

  1. Our government campaigned on 'satu rumah satu pc' and it is a good move to expose the importance of IT in our everyday life. Having a PC or laptops but without electricity is definitely not an intelligent idea. But people at the rural are using handphones (wireless communication), aren't they?

  2. It is an excellent effort in trying to instil the use of computers. In some general observation however, sometimes, when something is given totally free, the receipient tend to undervalue that given item. Have also read somewhere that those who receive for free tend to sell them away in exchange of cash. That could be the receipients' benefits that should not be questioned but if these happen, the prime objective of distributing those free item will not be achieved. Therefore, there must be measures to be taken to ensure that objectives are achieved.

  3. I do agree with u prof, without electricity is definitely not an intelligent idea....Abuan Sugut one of rural area in Beluran Sabah. No water n electricity there. How effective when government decides to give a free laptop for rural people, dont talk about laptop, even these communities at Abuan have their own handphones but it was useless because there is no coverage there. When they need to make a phone call by using handphone, they have to climb a hill near their village to get only one bar of coverage......only one bar...could u imagine how difficult their life there....

    So....what is the solution......
think about providing the infrastructures 1st...

    u/p: sekadar pandangan yang cetek....:)
